Leading Egyptian cinema fantasist Khairy Beshara enlists Nadah El Shazly for a lead role alongside Asser Yassin and Basma Hassan in his latest work, following El Shazly’s singular performance as the principal-character in About Her, which premiered at the 42nd Cairo International Film Festival in December 2020. Beshara’s National Day of Mourning in Mexico (يوم الحداد الوطني في المكسيك), is set in a time and place tragically undergoing a blanket ban on love.
National Day of Mourning in Mexico will be made available worldwide starting 10 March 2022 exclusively on Netflix, as part of the anthology series Love, Life & Everything in Between (في الحب… والحياة); an ode to Valentine's Day in various Arab cities, tinged with dark humour and exploring love at large and relationships up close.
The film’s theme song, written by Medhat El Adl, is revealed in the closing scene where the character played by El Shazly is seen riding her motorbike singing a duet with Yassin. She composed the song herself, with fellow Cairene artist Nancy Mounir on arrangement and film scoring duties.
As well as her carefully-selected forays into acting, Nadah El Shazly is known for her fresh and fearless performances as a composer, producer and vocalist, and as a prominent voice in the electronic music underworld of Cairo. Her debut album Ahwar both radically reinvents the popular music of her homeland and explores new sonic and harmonic frontiers. Using voice, field recordings and instruments, she creates haunting sound pieces and song forms that hijack perceptions of time.
Ahwar has received stellar reviews in international music publications, was featured in numerous “best albums of the year” lists, garnering El Shazly a feature on the cover of The Wire Magazine as the face of Cairo’s experimental music scene. El Shazly continues to compose for film while currently working on her sophomore album.

Hypnotic polyrhythms play a central role on Fera, creating the pulse for a sound that’s rich in acoustic tonality and lively energy. Louca uses custom-made, microtonal guitars to explore nuanced phrasings, and his languid interplay with violin, synthesizer, and other instruments lead to moments of vivid beauty. This wild and adventurous album that Egyptian artist Maurice Louca wrote over a four-year period takes its title from the Latin root for the word feral, and has its origins in a solo set that Louca first developed in 2019; the compositions eventually took their final shape when he recorded them in a Cairo studio in 2024 with a group of longtime collaborators and guests.
