Musician, composer and one of the most revered figures for today’s younger generation of experimental and alternative Arabic music scenes, Kamilya Jubran (text, oud & vocals), collaborates with long standing musical partner, composer, accomplished trumpet player and seasoned electronic musician Werner Hasler (trumpet & electronics).
In Wa (Arabic for and ), their third album together as a duo, Kamilya Jubran and Werner Hasler continue to interrogate their listening and their expression, their research and their desires, to unravel a musical universe of possibilities; “ a unison of timbres, cultures complementing, the complicity of verses, and modes and languages confronting each other ” in the duo’s own way of communicating respective origins and contemporaneity. Lyrical, within a sound full of contrast and ornamentation, they pursue an expansion of their repertoire with imaginative interpretation and improvisation.
For this release via Swiss label Everest Records, Jubran and Hasler seek new sonic and phonetic territory, based on the wasla compound form found in the classical repertoire of Near Eastern music and in Western modern and improvised music; a suite of musical explorations within one composition. In the 45-minutes-long piece that makes up the full length album, they gradually unveil to us the tenants of this artistic dialogue, as they deepen a longstanding musical pact nurtured since 2002 based on the probing and opening up of musical modes and traditions. The chemistry between Jubran and Hasler’s exchange gives birth to a singular, original and extratemporal sound.

About Kamilya Jubran & Werner Hasler
Kamilya Jubran (singer, oud) and Werner Hasler (trumpet, electronics) have been collaborating since 2002. Their first collaboration Mahattaat was their earliest experiment into bringing together disparate cultural and artistic roots. Their next collaboration, Wameedd , released in 2004, combined Jubran’s vocal skill and limitless imagination with Hasler’s melodies and his original aesthetics in electronic music. The duo then released Wanabni in 2010 followed by Wasl in 2016, featuring French double bass player Sarah Murcia.
Werner Hasler is a Swiss/Liechtenstein composer, trumpet player and electronic musician. Besides his long standing collaboration with Jubran, he runs The Outer String, a loose formation of cello, trumpet, electronics and drums. In the past years he has been working in various collaborations (with Hugo Ryser, Carlo Niederhauser, Vincent Courtois and many more) on hybrids of exhibition/installation and live performance. His most recent work OUT THERE completes a trilogy. OUT (2016), OUT TOO (2018) and OUT THERE (2019) are space filling, audio-visual installations including live sets with audio-surround. Hasler also lectures on Electronics & Music at Hochschule der Künste in Bern.
After her long career as the lead singer and qanoun player with the monumental Palestinian group Sabreen, Kamilya Jubran moved to Europe in 2002 and continued her search for an original musical expression on vocals and oud, whilst exploring new spaces and horizons for her compositions and texts through the various projects she instigates and is part of. Werner Hasler and Sarah Murcia featured in her first solo project Mahattaat in Switzerland in 2002, since then both becoming her main musical collaborators. Her collaborations with other artists include Sylvain Cathala, Mela Meierhans, Sawsan Darwaza, Mark Tompkins and Jon Balke. Jubran is the artistic director for Zamkana Association, which she also co-founded in October 2014 in Paris. Zamkana supports and accompanies original innovative artistic projects, supporting freedom of expression and secularism. Sodassi (Arabic for sextet, featuring Youmna Saba, Dina el Wedidi, Maya Khaldi, Ayed Fadel, Rasha Nahas and Sama’ Abdulhadi) is Zamkana’s fist artistic production starting in 2018.

يطلق كاميليا جبران و فرنر هاسلر في نوفمبر / تشرين الثاني المقبل ألبومهما الثالث سويا، « وَ ». كاميليا جبران – عود، غناء، كلمات ،مغنيه وملحنة تعد إحدى أهم الشخصيات في مشهد الموسيقى التجريبية والبديلة المغناة بالعربية ، وشريكها الموسيقي هو الملحن وعازف الترومبيت والموسيقي اﻹلكتروني المخضرم فرنر هاسلر .
يستمر الفنانان في تساؤلاتهما حول تعابيرهما الموسيقية المشتركة ويكشفان لنا عالماً من الامكانيات : تلاقي الالوان ، تكامل الثقافات وتصادمها في آنٍ، تواطؤ العبارات وتوازي الأنغام . حوارٌ فيه يعبر كل منهما عن جذوره ومعاصرته .« وَ » يقدم تسلسل لكلمات وصور من الواقع اليومي يحمله نسيجٌ موسيقيٌ حيٌّ، مستلهمٌ من مكونات الموسيقى الكلاسيكية العربية ومفعم ٌبرنين وآفاق الثقافه الإلكترونية .
في بحثهما عن اراضِ سمعية وصوتية جديدة، يعتمد الثنائي هيكل الوصلة – إحدى الكيانات الأساسية في الموسيقى الكلاسيكية العربية، كما في الموسيقات الاوروبية المعاصرة منها والمرتجلة . مؤلف واحد من 45 دقيقه تتسع به مساحة الأداء والمخيلة للثنائي وتستعرض لنا بعضاً من خصوصيات وأسرار حوارهما الفني المستمر منذ عام 2002.

عن كاميليا جبران وفرنر هاسلر
كاميليا جبران-صوت ، عود ، وفرنر هاسلر – ترومبيت ، إلكترونيات ، يعملان معاً منذ عام 2002. كان مشروع «محطات» أول تجربة لهما في تجميع جذورهما الثقافية والفنية المتباينة. صدر عملهم الثنائي «وميض» عام 2004 ومزج قدرات جبران الصوتية وخيالها غير المحدود بألحان هاسلر وجمالياته المبتكرة في مجال الموسيقى اﻹلكترونية. أصدر الثنائي بعدها «ونَبْني» في 2010 ثم «وَصْل» في 2016 بمشاركة عازفة الكونترباص الفرنسية سارة مورسيا.
فرنر هاسلر ملحن وعازف ترومبيت وموسيقي إلكتروني من سويسرا وليشتنشتاين. إلى جانب عمله المشترك مع جبران يدير هاسلر مجموعة «ذا آوتر سترينج» للتشيللو والترومبيت والإلكترونيات والطبول. في السنين الماضية شارك في عدة مشاريع (مع هوجو رايزر وكارلو نيدرهاوزر وفانسان كورتوا وآخرين) تمزج بين المعارض والعروض الحية. يكمّل أحدث أعماله «آوت ذير» ثلاثية: «آوت» (2016) و«آوت تو» (2018) و«آوت ذير» (2019)، تجهيزات صوتية بصرية تملأ الفضاء وتتضمن عروض حية بصوت محيط. هاسلر يحاضر أيضاً عن اﻹلكترونيات والموسيقى في كلية اﻵداب ببرن.
بعد مسيرتها الطويلة كمغنية أساسية وعازفة قانون بالفرقة الفلسطينية الرائدة صابرين انتقلت كاميليا جبران إلى أوروبا عام 2002، وتابعت بحثها عن تعبير موسيقي مبتكر بالصوت وعلى العود واستكشاف فضاءات وآفاق جديدة لألحانها ومؤلفاتها عبر مختلف المشاريع التي تطلقها وتشارك فيها. شارك فرنر هاسلر وسارة مورسيا في أول مشروع صولو «محطات» بسويسرا عام 2002، ومنذ ذلك الحين أصبحا شركاءها الموسيقيين الأساسيين. شاركت أيضاً فنانين آخرين مثل سيلفان كاتالا، ميلا ميرهانس، سوسن دروزة، مارك تومبكينز وجون بالك. تدير جبران فنياً مؤسسة «زمكنة» التي شاركت أيضاً في تأسيسها في باريس في أكتوبر 2014. «زمكنة» تشجع حرية التعبير و تدعم المشاريع الفنية المبتكرة المجددة العلمانيه . مشروع «سداسي» مع يمنى سابا ودينا الوديدي ومايا خالدي وعايد فضل ورشا نحاس وسماء عبد الهادي ، هو اول إنتاجات «زمكنة» الفنية في 2018.
