Free Middle Eastern music septet Karkhana – comprised of Sam Shalabi (Land Of Kush, Shalabi Effect, Dwarfs Of East Agouza), Sharif Sehnaoui (“A” Trio), Michael Zerang (Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Jaap Blonk, Ken Vandermark), Mazen Kerbaj (“A” Trio), Maurice Louca (Lekhfa, Alif, Dwarfs Of East Agouza), Tony Elieh (Johnny Kafta Anti-Vegetarian Orchestra), and Umut Çaglar (Konstrukt) – prepares to release Carte Blanche , featuring Nadah El Shazly , in January of 2019 via Unrock, following the release of the band’s four previous albums and El Shazly’s internationally-acclaimed debut Ahwar (Nawa, 2017).

The three tracks featured on Side AA of this split release were recorded during a residency at Malmö’s Inter Arts Center in January 2018. The band had been working on their forthcoming full length release (due in Spring 2019) when El Shazly joined them as a guest musician during their composition and recording sessions.

Carte Blanche will be released in January 2019 as a one-time pressing on 140g black vinyl, wrapped in an extra heavy deluxe cover with a printed cardboard insert. Side AA of this split release was recorded in Malmö by Fadi Tabbal and mixed at Tunefork Studios, Beirut.

Louca uses custom-made, microtonal guitars to explore nuanced phrasings, and his languid interplay with violin, synthesizer, and other instruments lead to moments of vivid beauty. This wild and adventurous album that Egyptian artist Maurice Louca wrote over a four-year period takes its title from the Latin root for the word feral, and has its origins in a solo set that Louca first developed in 2019; the compositions eventually took their final shape when he recorded them in a Cairo studio in 2024 with a group of longtime collaborators and guests.
